What is Thalassophobia?
Thalassophobia is the phobia of the sea or fear or deep water bodies such as oceans. It’s a kind of phobia where the person has an extraordinary fear of the sea, which cannot be explained easily. It could be because of a childhood trauma or some psychological problem.
Thalassophobia should not be taken lightly as it could lead to clinical depression in the person afflicted by it. It can lead to other psychological problems such as anxiety and stress as well. Another common test is to observe the changes in your reaction such as a reflexive action when exposed to a large water body.

There are a number of treatments for the fear of the sea such as hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming therapy). Both treatments involve helping the person get over the ocean phobia by targeting their subconscious mind.
Cognitive Behaviour therapy (CBT) is a popular treatment that helps people confront all sorts of phobias. Exposure therapy, which involves exposing the person to the fear in order to identify its root causes, is a popular treatment as well. Acupuncture is another treatment favored by those interested in alternative therapies for this condition.
Thalassophobia – Prevention
There is unfortunately no way to prevent this fear of the ocean from occurring. It is impossible to predict who might get this condition and who may not. The best way to prevent this fear of sea from striking anyone is to expose them to deep water bodies such as seas and oceans from a very young age.
Thalassophobia – Prognosis
The prognosis for the fear of oceans is quite good – it doesn’t take long for a psychotherapist to help a patient get over this condition. A few months of treatment should suffice for it. In the worst case scenario, it might take a year or two to help someone get over this phobia of the sea. There is nothing to stop you from having a normal life, even if you have Thalassophobia as long as you don’t have a job that requires you to venture deep into the sea or an ocean.

The best way to cope with this fear is to face it head on. You can start by learning how to swim, if you haven’t already. Join a swimming class and sign up for an informal therapeutic session under an experienced psychotherapist who has helped lots of people get over their various phobias. Don’t hesitate to ask for psychological help to help cope with this fear. The faster you confront your phobia the better – don’t allow it to fester or to linger.
